Jämsä has several local history museums and museums, specialized in agriculture, paper industry, and aviation. Most of the museums are open in summer and by request, but a couple of destinations are open all year round. The virtual museum of Jämsä is always available. Pälämäen kotiseutumuseoThe buildings of the Pälämäki museum introduce the life of a moderately well doing peasant at the end of the 19th century and turn of the 20th century in Jämsä. Some of the constructions date back to the 18th century, but their objects are from later period.

Aarresaaren kotiseutumuseoThe buildings of Aarresaari (Treasure Island) introduce the life of local people from 16th century to the early 18th century. The constructions and their objects show how the agricultural peasant life gradually changed through the industrialisation.

Kuoreveden kotiseutumuseoThe local museum of Kuorevesi is a home museum on a beautiful spot on shore of Lake Kuorevesi. The museum introduces local agricultural life and artefacts from 19th century and early 20th century. The museum is maintained by the local society of Kuorevesi.

Längelmäen kotiseutumuseo / Längelmäki Local Museum

Längelmäen kotiseutumuseoThe local museum of Längelmäki contains three buildings: a residential building, a drying barn, and a granary. The residential building is a smokehouse from Luutsaari Island, from Lake Isojärvi. It was still in use in summer 1959, when the host, Bruno Luutsaari, lived there. Originally, the house used to contain a decorated stoop which, unfortunately, could not be conserved for the museum. The Längelmäki museum is maintained by the Längelmäki Society.
Open: July 16-22 Mon-Sun 1–5 pm and by request.
No entrance fees.

Maamiehen museo / The Farmer’s Museum

Maamiehen museoThe Farmer’s Museum is a result of forty years’ personal collection, which shows farming-related artefacts and machinery from the beginning of 20th century to the end of 1950’s. The first floor of the museum introduces the farm life cycle of a year: cultivating, sowing, haymaking, harvesting, and threshing. A forest sled, forestry equipment and logs introduce forestry works. The upper level is owned for women’s works. There are items and machinery for processing flax into linen, weaving, milk processing, and making home-brewed beer. In a war time household, time seems to stop waiting for men to return from the front.

Hallinportti Ilmailumuseo / The Hallinportti Aviation Museum

Ilmailumuseo HallinporttiThe aviation museum Hallinportti displays aircrafts and aviation history. The museum contains a library, a warehouse building for small artefacts, and a hangar for airplanes. Guided tours with an expert of the field are organized for groups by prior booking.
Open: June 4 – Aug. 5, Mon-Fri 1-5 pm, Sat-Sun 12 noon - 5 pm, and by request.
Entrance fee: Adults €4, pensioners and students €2, children €1, joint ticket with the Old Office Museum of the Aviation Brothers, Weljesten Wanha Konttori €5.

Evakkoreki-Museo / The Sleigh and Wagon Museum

Carriages, sleighs, and tools from Karelian wagon masters from Valkjärvi village on display, including a fully furnished Karelian farmhouse with its inhabitants.
Open by request in summer, for groups only. You can also order a coffee service for your group.
Entrance fee: €2,50 per person. The museum owners speak Finnish, but local tourist guide services offer excursions in other languages as well.

Jamsan kirkkoThe church of Jämsä is a stone church, built in 1929. The Church Museum, located above the sacristy, contains valuable items from previous churches dating back to a Catholic church in Middle Ages. The church is open for visitors in summer as a road church.
Open in summer, Mon-Fri 11 am – 4 pm or by request.
Closed on Midsummer’s Eve.
No entrance fees.

Kuoreveden Uhrikirkko / Kuorevesi Church

Kuoreveden kirkkoThe beautiful wooden church of Kuorevesi was built solely with the offerings of the local parish members in 1779. The largest church bell was given by Queen Christina. The church is located in beautiful landscape, on shore of Lake Kuorevesi. Nearby is a historical church boat and a protected nature monument, the Rock of a Giant, which has an interesting legend to tell. The church is open for visitors in summer, as one of the road churches.
Open in summer Mon–Sat 11 am-3 pm, closed on Midsummer.
No entrance fees.

Lelumuseo HelminauhaThe toy museum introduces an extensive collection of around 5,000 toys from the beginning of 20th century to nowadays. The museum displays old items and children’s beloved toys from the past, including a stage and a collection of theatrical costumes for role plays, and a collection of Finnish china from the Arabia factory.

The Aviation Brother’s Old Office & Aerial Photography Exhibition

Weljesten Wanha Konttori, IlmavalokuvanäyttelyThe historical aerial photography exhibition of Veljekset Karhumäki Ltd. introduces photographs from the whole Finland, since 1930’s, all the way from Hanko to Petsamo. The exhibition in the former office of the aircraft factory introduce the historical phases of Finnish aviation industry. By prior booking it is possible to order an excursion with an expert.
Open: June 4th-Aug 5th, Mon-Fri 1 pm – 5 pm, Sat-Sun 12 noon - 5 pm. Other times by request.
Entrance fee: €3, a joint ticket with the Hallinportti Aviation museum €5.

Witikkalan kartanoThe Manor of Witikkala is located in the very centre of Jämsä and it has been renovated for the use of a lovely manor cafeteria and the Countryside Shop Museum of Paavo Virtanen. The manor includes a lifestyle shop with clothing, items of interior design and gifts.
Open all year round Tue-Fri 10-17, Sat 10-15.
