Jämsä has become a unique centre of felt masters, a true Felt Valley of Finland. Here you can find a unique combination of traditional felt industry with sheep farms, master craftsmen, and felt artists from both Finland and abroad, including societies who are specialized in felting. Every summer an International Felt Exhibition is held in Jämsä.
The beautiful nature and sceeneries of Jämsä have inspired famous artists for centuries. Even today, many artists have found their home in Jämsä. There are many galleries and interesting home ateliers to visit. The works painted in our region by Eliel Saarinen, Akseli Gallen-Kallela and other famous Finnish painters can be seen in the Art Museum of Gösta Serlachius, in our neighbour town, Mänttä-Vilppula.
From Local Museums to Virtual Museums
Jämsä has four local museums and several special museums, which introduce the visitor with local history, traditions, and previous lifestyle. The special museums give a deeper insight into old farm life, industrialization, including the birth of Finnish aviation industry. The museums are open during summer season and for groups by request, but with the help of our Virtual Museum, you are able to have a virtual sightseeing tour immediately on Museum24. As the name implies, it is open 24/7, so that you can walk down the memory line any time you like.
