The goal of the Social Welfare Act of Finland is to advance and maintain the welfare and social security of the residents of municipalities. The municipal social welfare services influence the social welfare, safety, working abilities, and social share of the residents. (Social Welfare Act 1301/2014, Chapter 1)
The Social Welfare Services have been divided into adult social work and child welfare social work for families with children. The social workers of Jämsä visit the municipal office of Kuhmoinen by prior appointment.
Adult Social Work
The aim for adult social work is to enable and strengthen the functional abilities and responsibility of a person over 18 years of age through the guidance and information which the social workers and social instructors offer. The work includes solving person’s social problems.

The aim for child welfare and social work for families is to ensure the welfare and healthy development for a child. It supports and helps the parents, providers, and other responsible caretakers to take care and raise the child in a healthy environment.

On the evenings, in nights, and on weekends, when families need urgent help from the social workers, for instance, if there is a family crisis or an emergency, or when there is an urgent concern of the situation of a child, a youth, an elderly person, or a disabled person, the Emergency Social Services Unit of Jyväskylä offers help also in Jämsä.
