In Jämsä, the authority of waste management is the Division of Municipal Engineering Services of the Technical Department of the City. In the rural areas, the services are provided by the Jämsän Jätehuolto liikelaitos (Waste Management Company of Jämsä). The Department for Environmental Protection ensures that the Waste Act and its regulations are followed and helps with questions concerning waste management.
All kinds of waste materials are received at the waste treatment facility of Erkki Salminen Ltd, at Myllyharjuntie 18, 42300 Jämsänkoski (including electronic waste), and on waste transfer station at Halli, Varastokuja 3, 33600 Halli.

Owners of private properties need to connect with organized waste collection. If the household produces very little waste, the owner of the property may file a written application for a permission to collect the waste less often. Multiple households can order joint waste containers. Applications for less frequent waste collection need to be addressed to the director of the Technical Department.
